What is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a common bacterial skin infection that is highly contagious. It usually affects pre-school and school aged children. Although can be seen in adults as well.

What Causes Impetigo?

Impetigo is caused by the bacterial strand Staphylococcus aureus. Although group A streptococcus can be the cause of Impetigo as well. Impetigo is highly contagious and can be spread from person to person. We usually see impetigo in children who have open cuts or scrapes, eczema, insect bites.

What are the Symptoms of Impetigo?

Impetigo is mostly seen on the face, hands, and feet but can be else where on the body. Impetigo is usually either as non-bullous (crusted), bullous (fluid filled blisters), or ecthyma (ulcers). A honey-crusted color is mostly noted with Impetigo.

How is Impetigo Diagnosed?

Impetigo is diagnosed by physical examination by a provider. Depending on how the impetigo looks we may culture swab the area to determine the bacteria.

How is Impetigo Treated?

Impetigo is treated with oral and/or topical antibiotics. 

How can you Prevent Impetigo?

Good hand hygiene and bathing regularly will help prevent any type of skin infection. If you do have Impetigo, make sure that you do not use others peoples clothing, towels, or personal products to help prevent spreading the infection.
