What is candidiasis?

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by a yeast called candida. It is normally present on the skin, in the intestinal tract and in warm moist parts of the body. Candida causes a problem or infection when it grows out of control.

What are the causes of candidiasis?

There are many risk factors or causes for candidiasis. Common types of candidiasis affect the skin, nails, mouth and vagina. These infections can develop in a healthy person, but are more common or persistent in people with diabetes, cancer, HIV and pregnant women.

Risk factors can include:

  • hot weather
  • damp environment restrictive clothing
  • poor hygiene
  • altered flora resulting from antibiotic therapy
  • inflammatory diseases and
  • immunosuppression

What are the symptoms of Candidiasis?

Signs and symptoms will depend on the type of yeast causing the infection and location of the infection. Infections of the skin and nails may include: 

  • red itchy skin
  • bumpy rash or pus- filled bumps
  • painful cracks at the corners of the mouth and thick
  • discolored or chipping nails.

How is it diagnosed?

Candidiasis is diagnosed through physical exam and medical history performed by a dermatologist. In some cases, cultures are taken as they are indicated.
