What is Intertrigo?

Intertrigo is inflammation in the skin folds, mostly in the groin, axillary, and sometimes under the breast or abdominal folds. Typically, it is chronic skin condition but can have periods of remission with proper treatment.

What are the signs and symptoms of Intertrigo?

Intertrigo can itch or burn and have areas of redness and skin breakdown. Exposure to heat and high humidity climate areas can make Intertrigo flare up. Often people with Intertrigo also are more prone to yeast and/or fungal infections.

Who is at risk for Intertrigo?

Intertrigo can affect all genders and race. It is especially common in obese individuals or people with a history of diabetes.

Ways to prevent Intertrigo?

Reduce excess moisture and heat by wearing moisture wicking fabric and cotton clothing. Avoid tight fitting clothes. Ensure skins fold are kept dry by toweling off dry after showers or air drying.
