WHAT IS PSORIASIS?

Psoriasis is a rash that appears as red scaly thickened skin. The involved areas are usually well defined and the scale is silvery white. Cases involving skin folds lack the scale and appear moist. Any part of the skin can be affected but the most common areas are the scalp, elbows, and knees. Psoriasis can be itchy. It is a lifelong skin condition that waxes and wanes in extent and severity.

What causes Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is immune mediated. Genetic factors are involved.

Who gets Psoriasis?

Psoriasis affects 2-4% of the population. The most common ages of onset are 15-25 and 50-60 years. It tends to be more common in Caucasians but all races are affected.
