What is Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis Pilaris is a very common benign skin disorders of the follicles. It is a result of mild follicular plugging and inflammation around the follicle.

What are the Signs/Symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris?

Characterized by small follicular bumps on the back of the upper arms and on top of the thighs most commonly. Sometimes it can occur on the cheeks of the face and buttocks. They are asymptomatic; however, people may be bothered by the roughness (like sandpaper) and sometime redness of the affected skin.

Who gets Keratosis Pilaris?

Most common in children, adolescents, and young adults. Especially common in those with significant dry skin or history of eczema. There usually is a family history competent to this.

How is Keratosis Pilaris Diagnosed?

Keratosis Pilaris is mostly diagnosed in the clinical setting, but biopsy can be done to confirm diagnosis.

What is the treatment for Keratosis Pilaris?

Treatment is focused on the appearance and or symptoms associated with Keratosis Pilaris. It is important to remember that improvement with topical treatment maybe temporary as Keratosis Pilaris usually returns to baseline. Generally, Keratosis Pilaris that is generally over the whole body can be chronic in nature. Otherwise, children and young adults with Keratosis Pilaris may not experience this skin condition long term.
