Dermatologists are often asked who is most at risk of developing skin cancer. Technically, everyone is at risk, but there are factors that increase or decrease that risk. Caucasians are more likely to be diagnosed than other races, men over the age of 50 have a higher risk of developing melanoma, and people with skin of color are more often diagnosed with melanoma in advanced stages. Additionally, your risk factors can increase if:
- You have 50+ moles (especially large, atypical moles)
- You have sun-sensitive skin, blue or green eyes, and are prone to freckling
- You have had previous cancer (such as non-melanoma, melanoma, breast, or thyroid cancer)
- You have a family history of melanoma
- You have a history of excessive sun exposure or indoor tanning
Your best course of action regarding skin cancer is simply observance and preventative measures. The American Academy of Dermatology encourages everyone to examine their skin regularly, this includes checking your entire body, back, scalp, palms, feet, even between your toes, as well as regular spot checks at your dermatologist. You want to be on the lookout for any changes in your already existent moles, and definitely watch for any new moles or marks that arise. Skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early, which is why it is imperative to watch your skin, if left unnoticed or ignored skin cancer can spread to other organs and become very serious. Watch for any moles that are asymmetrical, different colors, larger than 6mm, and that have changed or continue to change.
The good news regarding skin cancer, or at least the silver lining, is that we know what causes it! That means we can better prepare ourselves and take the preventative measures necessary to protect our skin. UV exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all types of skin cancer. Below are some ways to better protect your skin:
- Wear sunscreen with at least 6% Zinc and a SPF of 30 or higher
- Seek shade and remember the sun is strongest between 10AM – 2PM
- Wear protective clothing when possible, such as long pants, sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses
- Take extra care around highly reflective areas like bodies of water, sand, and snow
- Avoid tanning beds
