Pityriasis Rosea Treatment

What is Pityriasis Rosea?

A harmless skin rash that results in large scaly red patches and can affect any age group.

What causes Pityriasis Rosea?

The cause of this condition has not been identified. It is thought that viruses can trigger pityriasis rosea in some cases.

What are the symptoms?

Pityriasis rosea begins with large, slightly raised, scaly rash (called a herald patch) on the back, chest, or abdomen. In most cases the rash is preceded by mild cold-like symptoms including headache, fever, and fatigue. The initial rash will be followed by more itchy patches or tiny bumps that spread out in a pattern some describe as looking like a fir tree.

How is Pityriasis Rosea diagnosed?

Typically, a dermatology provider will be able to diagnose pityriasis rosea with a simple physical examination. Pityriasis rosea clears on its own, but it is important to be diagnosed by a physician to rule out any other possible issues. At times, testing is necessary to rule out or identify other conditions that may need to be followed or treated. Pityriasis rosea usually resolves in 3 to 12 weeks.
