What is Raynaud’s Disease?

Raynaud’s disease, also called Raynaud’s Phenomena or Syndrome, is a disorder of the blood vessels which causes them to narrow, usually in the fingers and toes, when they are cold or stressed resulting in the affected areas turning white or blue.

What causes Raynaud’s Syndrome?

The cause of primary Raynaud’s Syndrome is unknown. It happens on its own. Raynaud’s is seen more in colder climates, more in women than men and sometimes follows a family history. There is a secondary Raynaud’s (less common) which is caused by injuries, other diseases and certain medicines.

What are the symptoms of Raynaud’s Disease?

Raynaud’s causes fingers or toes to become blue or white when cold or stressed due to restricted blood flow. As circulation returns, the skin becomes red and throbs or tingles.

How is Raynaud’s Disease Diagnosed?

Raynaud’s Disease is diagnosed by medical history and physical exam to rule out other medical problems.
