Scabies Treatment

What is Scabies?

Scabies is an intense itchy rash that is caused by a burrowing. It is highly contagious especially with individuals in close contact with each other.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Scabies?

Individuals with scabies complain of an intense itch and skin rash. They can be found in the wrist, spaces of the fingers, abdomen (especially the belly button), axilla and genitals. Scabies usually avoids the face and scalp regions. Usually, the itching is worse at night especially at bedtime. It is important to have house hold contacts come in and be treated as well. Sometimes burrows are difficult to see, however, people are so itchy that they cannot resist scratching. The itching can last a couple of weeks after treatment of scabies.

Who is at Risk for Scabies?

Scabies can affect people of any age. However, it is more common in the elderly, those living in close contact (e.g., long term care facilities), and children.

How is Scabies Diagnosed?

Diagnoses for scabies can be made by closely looking for burrows in office. If a diagnosis is unclear in office a skin biopsy may be done to confirm diagnosis. Many times, people have struggled with scabies infestation for some time before it is correctly diagnosed and treated.
