What is an IPL treatment?

IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is a skin rejuvenation technique that improves the appearance of uneven pigmentation, skin texture, skin tone, and fine lines.

This treatment is a quick and easy way to undo damaged skin caused by the sun including vessels, broken capillaries, hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and freckles.

Intense pulsed light treatments can also improve redness that frequently occurs with rosacea and acne scarring. You may be just a few treatment sessions away from a clear and glowing complexion!

What to Expect with IPL Treatments?

This skin rejuvenating treatment has multiple steps. First, we thoroughly clean the skin and apply an optional numbing cream.

Then, we use pulses of targeted light therapy to destroy the damaged skin cells.

During the treatment, IPL therapy is non-invasive, as light energy safely passes through the skin to selectively light and heat the target vascular tissue with minimal discomfort.

What are the benefits of an IPL treatment?

  • IPL treatments can improve sun spots, age spots, dull complexion, spider veins, uneven pigmentation, large pores, sun-damaged skin, acne scarring, and early signs of aging
  • IPL also can improve red-flushing skin, rosacea, and broken capillaries.
  • An IPL treatment results in smoother skin with a more even tone.

What improvement will I see after an IPL treatment?

Patients at Skin Solutions are very pleased with the results of an IPL treatment. Some patients see a 70% – 95% improvement. After successive treatments, the skin often appears smoother, has a more even tone, and has fewer spots.

How does an IPL treatment work?

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy works by shining broadband wavelengths of light energy into the skin, which can be customized to selectively target different structures in the body or skin, such as a pigmented freckle or unwanted blood vessel.

As the light energy is applied, a slight sensation is felt during the treatment. The discomfort of the sensation depends on the client. Our approach at Skin Solutions allows IPL treatments to be tailored to each individual’s skin type, treatment area, and cosmetic concerns.

What is the downtime for an IPL treatment?

Because this is not a surgical procedure, there is little to no downtime. The treated skin may have redness or mild swelling for a few hours after the procedure.

We recommend many patients avoid excessive sun exposure or any chemical peels following an IPL facial treatment and use additional sun protection when spending time in the sun to prevent sun damage and additional redness. Dark spots will get darker post-procedure and then slough off on their own.

Are there side effects of Intense pulsed light?

Side effects from this treatment are rare. Immediately following the procedure, the appearance and texture of the skin may appear flushed, brown pigmented spots and scars may appear darker, and capillaries may be more visible.

In rare instances, temporary swelling and/or blistering can occur. Limiting sun exposure for several weeks before and after treatment will greatly minimize the risk of complications and produce a patient’s desired results.

How many IPL treatments will I need?

The number of treatments and treatment options will be discussed during your consultation with your laser technician.

Still, we typically recommend most patients get multiple sessions, specifically between 3-6 IPL treatments with follow-up treatments for optimal results. Earlier treatments may prevent progression, meaning fewer treatments will be needed for the patient.

How does IPL work for different skin complexions?

Previously, IPL technology could only work best on certain complexions, as addressing darker skin types is more difficult with this type of treatment. Oftentimes, it is harder to identify pigment differences with some lasers.

Skin Solutions prioritizes quality care for all clients, so we use a Quantalight Evolaser for darker skin tones which is more powerful than other lasers. This laser is located at our Brentwood location, where our Nashville patients have easy access.

Who are the best candidates for an IPL treatment?

The best candidates for an IPL treatment are the following:

  • People who are averse to surgical procedures

  • Patients with rosacea

  • Patients with sun-damaged and vascular skin

  • Patients concerned with skin texture or age spots

It’s possible you won’t receive an IPL treatment if you have been pregnant. Similarly, pregnant women cannot receive an IPL treatment.

What areas can be treated with IPL?

IPL can be used to treat most parts of the body such as the face, neck, legs, and chest.
