What is Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia areata is a non-scarring autoimmune inflammatory disease of the hair follicle. It may present suddenly, over the course of a few days. In most cases, it presents with few circular patches of hair loss involving the scalp. It may also affect the eyebrows, eyelashes, beard and body hair. Rarely, and in extreme cases, it can affect the entire scalp (alopecia totalis) or the entire body (alopecia universalis).

At what age does Alopecia Areata occur?

It is most common in children and young adults under the age of 30. However, it can affect anyone regardless of age and gender.

Does Alopecia Areata run in families?

One in five people with alopecia areata also has a family member who has had alopecia areata.

Is it related to other autoimmune diseases?

It is rarely associated with other autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disorders but most often is not associated with any underlying conditions.

Is there are cure?

There is no cure but there are treatments that can be suggested by our dermatologists to help the hair re-grow quickly. The course is relatively unpredictable, with many patients achieving partial or complete regrowth after treatment.
