Is your facial redness rosacea? If you battle with rosacea redness on a regular basis, you could benefit from using topical brimonidine – otherwise known as Mirvaso. Our dermatology specialists at our practices in Nashville and Franklin in Tennessee, we have been slow to prescribe it regularly. While Mirvaso is a great treatment for patients dealing with redness, it may come with a crop of side effects as well.

A recent case report highlighted a rosacea patient who used Mirvaso everyday, which eventually caused more redness and essentially worsened her rosacea. Given that we do not have data on the long term effects of daily use of Mirvaso, our dermatology specialists in Nashville and Franklin Tennessee have never recommended that people use it daily – and clearly, it seems, for good reason. For this particular rosacea patient, Mirvaso is no longer an option on the days she really wants to use it.

The report did show, however, that the patient was using Mirvaso twice the recommended amount per day. This could indicate that a large dose of this drug was responsible for worsening her rosacea. I would recommend using Mirvaso only on days where facial redness is going to pose a real problem for my dermatology patients, such as a public performance or a special social function.

Mirvaso is a useful product to have in any rosacea patient’s toolkit. However, given that it is still a fairly new treatment, we need to exercise caution in order to better understand the impact of its side effects.

Rosacea is a difficult condition to live with and to treat.

These are a few Dermatologist approved rosacea products that calm the redness of our Tennessee rosacea patients: La Roche Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cream and Likewise Moisturizing Defense.
