Skin Solutions Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a difficult condition that many of my patients struggle with and people across the country suffer from. It prompted a study to investigate whether psoriasis patients face a stigma surrounding their condition.

The survey involved 514 people and the results showed that 73% of participants reported a degree of stigmatization. The factors here contributing to stigmatization included greater disease visibility, severity, longer disease duration and greater social inhibition. Type D personality was also included as a factor as it is a personality type in which people both tend to experience negative effects and inhibit their emotional and behavioral expression to avoid negative responses from other people.

Given that so many people have psoriasis, it is important for us physicians to know how it impacts their life in order for us to identify what their best treatment option is. We want to know not only how psoriasis affects them physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. There are some with psoriasis covering a large area of their body, yet they are unbothered by it. This group tends to be resistant to taking systemic medications with more internal impacts. Others have focal psoriasis but it may involve an area such as the genitals which makes it harder to form intimate relationships; and leads to living a more introverted life. No matter how a psoriasis patients is being impacted, we want to be aware of it so that we can help them get it under control and ensure that they feel comfortable.
