Is One Wash Enough? Why Your Cleansing Routine Might Be Causing Your Breakouts.

Do you get random breakouts but don’t know why? It might be because you aren’t washing your face properly. Even if you don’t wear makeup, mineral SPF is designed to stay put, and a standard water-based cleanser often “slides” over it, leaving a film that clogs pores overnight.

Why do I break out even if I don't wear makeup?

If you are wearing your mandatory daily SPF, you still need a deep clean. Sunscreen is formulated to be water-resistant and long-wearing; a single wash often fails to break down these physical blockers, leading to trapped bacteria and congestion.

Some dermatologists caution against it because they worry people may end up over-cleansing, leaving skin sensitized and uncomfortably dry. However, if you use non-drying, non-irritating cleansers, most experts give double cleansing the green light.

The “gold standard” for the first step is an emollient-based formula—like a cleansing oil, balm, or cream. These are specifically designed to bond with and dissolve oil-based debris (like makeup and sunscreen) without stripping your skin’s natural moisture. This prepares the skin so your second water-based cleanser can actually reach your pores.

Yes! It sounds counterintuitive, but “oil dissolves oil.” Using an emollient first step helps break down the hardened, oxidized sebum (oil) and mineral SPF that often lead to blackheads and breakouts. By following up with a gentle foaming cleanser, you ensure all that debris is whisked away without leaving a greasy residue.
