How to Spot Skin Cancer: The ABCDE Rule

How do I know if a mole is cancerous?

You can identify potential skin cancer by using the ABCDE rule to evaluate your moles: Asymmetry (lopsided shape), Border (irregular or blurry edges), Color (multiple shades), Diameter (larger than 6mm), and Evolving (any change in size, shape, or symptom). If a mole meets any of these criteria, it requires a professional exam by a board-certified dermatologist.

What is the ABCDE rule for skin cancer?

The ABCDE rule is a clinical guide used by dermatologists and patients to identify the early warning signs of melanoma. Early detection is critical; when caught early, most skin cancers are highly treatable.

  • A is for Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other half.
  • B is for Border: The edges are ragged, blurred, or irregular instead of smooth.
  • C is for Color: The mole has multiple shades of tan, brown, black, or even patches of red, white, or blue.
  • D is for Diameter: The spot is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser).
  • E is for Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color, or it has started to itch, crust, or bleed.

What does a “normal” mole look like?

Most people have moles, and the majority are harmless. A normal, benign mole is typically:

A uniform color (usually tan or brown).

Round or oval-shaped with distinct, smooth borders.

Stable, meaning it does not change over time.

How do I perform a skin self-exam?

Performing a monthly self-exam helps you become familiar with your skin so you can notice changes quickly.

Check your face and scalp: Use a mirror to check your ears and the back of your neck.

Examine your torso: Check your chest, stomach, and underarms.

Check your “hidden” areas: Don’t forget your palms, the soles of your feet, and between your toes.

Use a buddy: Have a partner check your back and the backs of your thighs.

When should I see a dermatologist for a mole?

While the ABCDE rule is a helpful home tool, it does not replace a professional diagnosis. You should schedule a skin check at Skin Solutions Dermatology if:

A mole fits any of the ABCDE criteria.

You have an “Ugly Duckling” spot—a mole that looks significantly different from all your others.

A spot is new or growing rapidly.
