What is Acanthosis Nigricans?
Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) is a skin condition appearing as dark, velvety discoloration in body folds, often with a thickened, papillomatous texture.
Who is at risk?
People with skin phototypes IV-VI(dark skin), obesity, type 2 diabetes, PCOS, or a family history of AN are at an increased risk. Additionally, certain medications like glucocorticoids, niacin, insulin, oral contraceptives, and protease inhibitors can increase the risk.
What are the signs and symptoms?
Dark, velvety discoloration and thickened skin plaques with accentuated skin lines are the primary signs. These typically appear in body folds like the neck, armpits, and groin. Less commonly, they can affect the navel, face, back of the hands, and palms (Tripe Palms, associated with malignant AN).
